Description
A total hip replacement (also known as hip arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure in which a damaged, arthritic ball-and-socket hip joint is removed and replaced with durable artificial components.
During the procedure, an orthopedic surgeon removes the worn-out head of the thigh bone (femur) and fits a metal or ceramic stem down into the bone, topped with a smooth prosthetic ball (femoral head). The damaged socket in the pelvis is cleared out and lined with a metal shell (acetabular component), and a smooth plastic, ceramic, or metal liner is placed inside to ensure fluid, friction-free movement.
