Description
An ACL reconstruction is a common arthroscopic (minimally invasive) surgical procedure performed to replace a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament—one of the major stabilizing ligaments inside the knee joint.
Because a torn ACL cannot simply be stitched back together, an orthopedic surgeon removes the damaged tissue and replaces it with a tissue graft. This graft acts as a scaffolding framework. The surgeon drills precise tunnels into the thigh bone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) to position the new tissue exactly where the old ligament lived, securing it tightly with medical screws or anchors.
